The Ardgowan Hotel was originally built in 1847 as two Georgian town houses designed by the famous Scottish Architect, George Rae. The hotel was remodelled in a modern Scottish style and now has 29 bedrooms of various size and category. The hotel is set back from North Street with a south facing terrace in front of our restaurant, Playfair’s.
The Pilmour Hotel was also built in 1820, also as a Georgian town house . It is located directly next door to the Ardgowan Hotel and has 7 comfortable en-suite bedrooms above Playfair's Bar. Guests who stay in the Pilmour Hotel will still check-in and check-out with us in the Ardgowan Hotel. Breakfast is served in Playfair's Restaurant, just underneath the Ardgowan Hotel.
Both hotels are centrally located within St Andrews, with the town centre, University and the ancient castle and cathedral all within five minutes walk. We are also positioned only 180 yards from the world famous Old Course and the R&A building.
Free on-street parking is available directly opposite the hotels on Abbotsford Crescent, Hope Street and Howard Place. In addition to this, there are free car parks close by at Murray Place and Petheram Bridge. Cars may be parked free outside the hotels on North Street after 5pm until 9am the next morning and all day on Sunday.

Located below the Ardgowan Hotel, Playfair’s is extremely popular both with our guests and with residents of St Andrews. From local steaks and seafood cooked fresh on our chargrill to a selection of seasonal specials. Our chefs prepare all our dishes with fresh, local ingredients to create menus to celebrate the very best of modern Scottish cuisine. You can see a list of their menus by clicking here.
For residents of the hotel, we offer a Dinner, Bed and Breakfast Upgrade. This costs £25.00 per person and gives each guest £30.00 to spend on the a la carte menu in Playfair’s Restaurant and Steakhouse.
Please give us a call or email and we would be delighted to arrange a reservation for you in Playfair’s Restaurant. Please note that all Dinner upgrades must be arranged prior to arrival.
Finally, we have Playfair's Bar in our Annex, the Pilmour Hotel, located directly next door to the Ardgowan Hotel. The Bar serves the same quality food and drinks as Playfair's in a more casual atmosphere. You can watch the latest sport on one of our 7 TVs, and it's dog friendly! You can check out their menu by clicking here.
